It can write, code, plan, and even make decent decisions. But one thing it still can't do is take initiative like a human with high agency. That&#8217;s what George Mack explores on <a href="https://www.highagency.com">highagency.com</a>, where he breaks down why the ability to take action matters more than ever.</p><p>This post pulls some of the best ideas from George&#8217;s <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oKPARKxZdM">interview</a> on the <em>My First Million</em> podcast. The right words don&#8217;t just describe your reality, they help create it.</p><h2>Ideas are Avocados</h2><blockquote><p>Ideas are avocados&#8230;I&#8217;m not going to let this go brown, I'm going to do this thing right now.</p></blockquote><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!54-0!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9307bc2d-8c11-45a7-9149-8f7ce5cb672a_1536x1024.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!54-0!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9307bc2d-8c11-45a7-9149-8f7ce5cb672a_1536x1024.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!54-0!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9307bc2d-8c11-45a7-9149-8f7ce5cb672a_1536x1024.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!54-0!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9307bc2d-8c11-45a7-9149-8f7ce5cb672a_1536x1024.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!54-0!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9307bc2d-8c11-45a7-9149-8f7ce5cb672a_1536x1024.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!54-0!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9307bc2d-8c11-45a7-9149-8f7ce5cb672a_1536x1024.png" width="470" height="313.4409340659341" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/9307bc2d-8c11-45a7-9149-8f7ce5cb672a_1536x1024.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:971,&quot;width&quot;:1456,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:470,&quot;bytes&quot;:null,&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;Generated image&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:null,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:null,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="Generated image" title="Generated image" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!54-0!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9307bc2d-8c11-45a7-9149-8f7ce5cb672a_1536x1024.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!54-0!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9307bc2d-8c11-45a7-9149-8f7ce5cb672a_1536x1024.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!54-0!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9307bc2d-8c11-45a7-9149-8f7ce5cb672a_1536x1024.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!54-0!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9307bc2d-8c11-45a7-9149-8f7ce5cb672a_1536x1024.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg role="img" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><title></title><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p>Good ideas don&#8217;t last forever. Applicants to the prestigious startup accelerator are given just <strong>10 minutes</strong> to pitch their ideas. As Garry explains:</p><blockquote><p>&#8220;The surprising thing that has worked over and over again is that, in those 10 minutes, you either learn a lot about both the founders and the market &#8212; or you don&#8217;t. So we&#8217;re looking for incredibly crisp communication. I want to know: What is it? And often, the first thing I ask is not just <em>what</em> it is, but <em>why</em> you're working on it.&#8221;</p></blockquote><p>Once accepted, founders work with YC to distill their startup&#8217;s purpose into a <strong>two-second description</strong> &#8212; a task that sounds simple, but is remarkably difficult. Condensing something meaningful into such a tight frame requires deep understanding and focused thinking.</p><p>Garry draws a comparison to Paul Graham&#8217;s famously thoughtful essays, which are admired for their distilled insight:</p><blockquote><p>&#8220;[Founders] are actually figuring out a very complex concept and then trying to say it in as few words as possible. The amount of time Paul spends on his essays is fascinating &#8212; sometimes weeks &#8212; just iterating and seeking feedback. He works to say the most with the fewest words. And that <em>is</em> thinking. Writing <em>is</em> thinking. One of the most surprising things we do at YC is help people refine their two-sentence pitch &#8212; and it takes real thinking.&#8221;</p></blockquote><p>When asked directly what he&#8217;s learned from Paul Graham, Garry said:</p><blockquote><p>&#8220;The number one thing &#8212; and it&#8217;s hard, but it&#8217;s so clear in his essays &#8212; is to be plainspoken and hyper-aware of artifice... basically, to cut the bullshit.&#8221;</p></blockquote><p>This focus on plain, direct language isn&#8217;t just stylistic &#8212; it&#8217;s a core operating principle. At Y Combinator, clarity is treated as a proxy for real understanding.</p><p>The culture at Y Combinator is clearly shaped by Graham&#8217;s communication philosophy. From 10-minute interviews to two-sentence pitches, these mechanisms compel founders to think sharply, speak clearly, and cut through the noise.</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://www.podgems.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading pod gems! They each rejected conventional business norms, opting instead for approaches grounded in simplicity, control, and product focus. Faulkner kept Epic private and founder-led, with no outside funding; Graham backed founders who could build, not just pitch, and structured YC with minimal friction. In different ways, both pushed the programmer-to-founder model to its full potential&#8212;applying first principles not just to code, but to organizational design.</p><p>In today&#8217;s AI-driven landscape, there&#8217;s a growing belief that technical depth is being commoditized&#8212;replaced by abstraction layers and automated tools. But Faulkner and Graham both demonstrate how a foundational understanding of computer science still provides a significant advantage. It&#8217;s not just about writing code; it&#8217;s about systems thinking, abstraction, scalability, and knowing when complexity is necessary versus when it&#8217;s a liability. Around 48 minutes into this episode the following book quote was read, in which Murakami reflects on his failure to run a marathon after having done so in the past:</p><blockquote><p>Without knowing it, I&#8217;d developed a sort of arrogant attitude, convinced that just a fair-to-middling amount of training was enough for me to do a good job. It&#8217;s pretty thin, the wall separating healthy confidence and unhealthy pride.</p></blockquote><p>I thought that was a simple but very profound reflection by Murakami. It seems like many people struggle with that same issue &#8212; learning how to navigate that &#8220;thin wall&#8221; between confidence and pride. It is a life lesson that we all need to learn (and probably relearn) at some point.</p><h2>Healthy Addictions</h2><div class="apple-podcast-container" data-component-name="ApplePodcastToDom"><iframe class="apple-podcast " data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://embed.podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-harsh-truth-about-self-discipline-ft-rich-roll/id1247526593?i=1000657934197&quot;,&quot;isEpisode&quot;:true,&quot;imageUrl&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/podcast-episode_1000657934197.jpg&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;The Harsh Truth About Self-Discipline (ft. Like, what's the difference? If I feel compelled to run every day to keep myself happy, and if not running every day makes me noticeably unhappy, how is that, psychologically speaking, any different from needing to have a drink every day to be happy? &#8230;I'm slowly arriving at the view that one doesn't necessarily get rid of addictive or compulsive behaviors so much as steer them into healthier addictions and compulsions.</p></blockquote><p>It was interesting to connect this to the previous podcast, because how Murakami talks about running sounds very similar to what Mark Manson expresses here. I think almost everyone has compulsive tendencies, and maybe the key isn&#8217;t trying to eliminate those, but rather steer them into healthy and productive habits.</p><h2>The Miracle of Life</h2><div class="apple-podcast-container" data-component-name="ApplePodcastToDom"><iframe class="apple-podcast " data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://embed.podcasts.apple.com/kg/podcast/robert-greene/id1190981360?i=1000655845286&quot;,&quot;isEpisode&quot;:true,&quot;imageUrl&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/podcast-episode_1000655845286.jpg&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;Robert Greene&quot;,&quot;podcastTitle&quot;:&quot; This Past Weekend w/ Theo Von&quot;,&quot;podcastByline&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;duration&quot;:7736000,&quot;numEpisodes&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;targetUrl&quot;:&quot;https://podcasts.apple.com/kg/podcast/robert-greene/id1190981360?i=1000655845286&amp;uo=4&quot;,&quot;releaseDate&quot;:&quot;2024-05-16T19:36:00Z&quot;}" src="https://embed.podcasts.apple.com/kg/podcast/robert-greene/id1190981360?i=1000655845286" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay *; encrypted-media *;" allowfullscreen="true"></iframe></div><p>I highly recommend listening to the entire segment, which starts <a href="https://youtu.be/0Q-YgeYB8_A?si=98rTFidFcDwRQ_z-&amp;t=1975">here</a> at about 33 minutes in. Robert Greene shares a powerful take on gratitude:</p><blockquote><p>The idea that our planet has life on it is incredibly strange...an accident totally fortuitous...billions of other planets have no life. Something snapped three billion years ago...we don't understand. Then life evolved in this weird fashion. The fact that you are here, the odds against it, are so astronomical&#8230;you must think is so strange it is so miraculous that I'm so grateful that I am who I am, it is incredible.</p></blockquote><p>I think we get so caught up in the routine of daily life that we don&#8217;t often pause and reflect enough on the cosmic miracle of our existence. You can change it, you can accept it, or you can leave it. What isn't a good option is to sit around wishing you'd change it but not changing it, wishing you'd leave it but not leaving it, and not accepting it. That struggle, that aversion, is responsible for most of our misery. The phrase I use most often to myself is "accept." Anytime I'm judging something about myself, I just say "accept."</p></blockquote><p>I like this simple philosophy as it blends elements of Stocisim, Buddhism, and Existenialism. We are responsible for our lives and deciding whether or not we want to make changes. And if we choose not to make a change, then we should accept our situation without condemning or resisting it.</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://www.podgems.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading pod gems! Like you are doing something, you are able to change your environment in a way that is creating value in some way. And it's such a key component of our happiness and well-being. It can be as simple as, I don't know, being a garbage man or whatever. But the act of interviewing people and putting interesting ideas out into the world is clearly valuable, and in ways that we often may not even realize.</p><div><hr></div><h2>Mark Cuban: Shark Tank, DEI &amp; Wokeism Debate, Elon Musk, Politics &amp; Drugs | Lex Fridman Podcast</h2><div class="apple-podcast-container" data-component-name="ApplePodcastToDom"><iframe class="apple-podcast " data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://embed.podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/422-mark-cuban-shark-tank-dei-wokeism-debate-elon-musk/id1434243584?i=1000650883010&quot;,&quot;isEpisode&quot;:true,&quot;imageUrl&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/podcast-episode_1000650883010.jpg&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;#422 &#8211; Mark Cuban: Shark Tank, DEI &amp; Wokeism Debate, Elon Musk, Politics &amp; Drugs&quot;,&quot;podcastTitle&quot;:&quot;Lex Fridman Podcast&quot;,&quot;podcastByline&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;duration&quot;:8618000,&quot;numEpisodes&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;targetUrl&quot;:&quot;https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/422-mark-cuban-shark-tank-dei-wokeism-debate-elon-musk/id1434243584?i=1000650883010&amp;uo=4&quot;,&quot;releaseDate&quot;:&quot;2024-03-29T20:59:49Z&quot;}" src="https://embed.podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/422-mark-cuban-shark-tank-dei-wokeism-debate-elon-musk/id1434243584?i=1000650883010" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay *; encrypted-media *;" allowfullscreen="true"></iframe></div><h3>Embracing a positive attitude</h3><p>At one point in this episode Lex asks Mark Cuban how he defines success, to which Mark replies:</p><blockquote><p>Waking up every day with a smile, excited about the day. People always say when you get that kind of money, does it make you happy? My answer always is if you are happy when you are broke, you&#8217;re going to be really, really, really happy when you&#8217;re rich&#8230;If you were miserable in your job before, there&#8217;s a good chance you&#8217;re still going to be miserable if that&#8217;s just who you are.</p></blockquote><p>Of course, not having money can make life very challenging. But to what extent is happiness dependent on money? Cuban seems like he&#8217;s always had a positive attitude, whether selling door-to-door as a kid or managing multi-million dollar businesses. In that sense, he has always maintained a mindset of success.</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://www.podgems.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading Pod Gems!
